PILOT RATINGS COURSES

INSTRUMENT RATING

The Instrument Flight Rules  [also known as Instrument Rating, IFR and IR] courses cover the full NZCAA syllabus (AC 61) for the theory portion of an Instrument Rating. IFR Law, IFR Flight Navigation, and IFR Instruments and Navaids. Meteorology and Human Factors are covered in the CPL courses for CPL pilots. For pilots with a PPL licence you can do the new IR - Operational Knowledge course.  The GNSS knowledge is now integrated in to the IFR courses. A new Performance Based Navigation (PBN) course will be launched very soon. We also have an ADF/NDB course for those that want this endorsement on their instrument rating (see below)

All courses include short tests and practice exams to prepare you for the NZCAA Exams.

AEROPLANE BASIC TURBINE KNOWLEDGE RATING

This BGT course for aeroplanes, provides the knowledge required to prepare for the NZCAA Basic Gas Turbine Knowledge exam. It follows the AC 61.10 syllabus, Subject 64 Basic Turbine Knowledge – Aeroplane.  The syllabus is based on a “basic” level of knowledge applicable to the operation of a turbine engine, such as would be required by a pilot about to undergo training toward a type rating on their first turbine engine aircraft

Each section has a short test, and you can practice BGT exams from an extensive question database.

HELICOPTER BASIC TURBINE KNOWLEDGE RATING

This BGT course for helicopters, provides the knowledge required to prepare for the NZCAA Basic Gas Turbine Knowledge exam. The CAA recently split up aeroplane and helicopter BGT syllabus. This course follows the AC 61.10 syllabus, Subject No 65 Basic Turbine Knowledge - Helicopter

The syllabus is based on a “basic” level of knowledge applicable to the operation of a turbine engine, such as would be required by a pilot about to undergo training toward a type rating on their first turbine engine aircraft

Each section has a short test, and you can practice BGT exams from an extensive question database.

Note: The new BTK Helicopter exam and syllabus starts on 1st Nov 2024

PERFORMANCE BASED NAVIGATION PBN ENDORSEMENT

This new course replaces the GNSS course. GNSS theory is now covered in the Instrument Rating syllabus and exams. In addition to the GNSS rating endorsement on an Instrument Rating a PBN endorsement is required based on the PBN specification for aircraft operations – RNP 1 and 2, RNP APCH, or RNP APCH – AR.

This course meets the requirements set in the NZ CAA Advisory Circular AC61-17 Appendix III – PBN Knowledge. It covers all of the PBN Specifications. You are only required to train up to the PBN Specification that will be demonstrated in your flight test so we have exams to match your training requirements, with certificates and exam feedback (KDR).

We also have a brief summary of your GPS unit, we offer Avidyne IFD 550, Boeing Smiths FMS, Collins Pro Line 21/FMS 3000, Garmin 1000, Garmin GTN 650/750, Garmin 430W/530W, and GNX 375.

As this course includes an assessment and certification  it must be conducted by a Part 141 Training Organisation. Our training partner Ardmore Flying School provide the certification.

NDB/ADF KNOWLEDGE

After a re-write of the Instrument Rating course syllabus the ADF/NDB knowledge was removed as subject knowledge. Pilots can still get an ADF/NDB endorsement on their Instrument Rating after gaining the knowledge and demonstrating skill by passing a flight examiner test.

This course covers AC61 – 17 Appendix IV ADF/NDB Theory Course Syllabus. After successful completion we will provide you with a certificate and exam feedback to present to the flight examiner. This course and exam is conducted by Ardmore Flying School, a Part 141 Training provider.
