Airline Transport Pilot Licence
The Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) for aeroplanes in New Zealand is the highest pilot license, required to act as a captain on large commercial aircraft. Pilots must complete 1,500 hours of flight time to "unfreeze" a frozen ATPL, which is a provisional license obtained after passing the theoretical exams, usually gained while working as a co-pilot. The licensing process involves passing comprehensive ground theory exams and gaining extensive flight experience.
