The KDR Refresher: Turning Your Exam Result Slip into a Study Plan

If you've sat a CAA written exam, you'll know the feeling. The pass (or near miss) arrives with a result slip full of KDR codes - and then the real question: what exactly do I need to brush up on before my instructor signs those knowledge deficiencies off?

That's the problem our KDR Refresher was built to solve, and a few months in, it's getting a lot of use. We wanted to share how it's going.

What is the KDR Refresher?

Every ASPEQ result slip lists Knowledge Deficiency Report (KDR) codes - the syllabus areas where your exam answers showed a gap. Before your flight test, an instructor needs to be satisfied you've closed those gaps.

The KDR Refresher does the legwork for you. Upload your ASPEQ result slip at kdr.stoneybrook.training and it reads your KDR codes, matches them to the syllabus, and generates a personalised study guide targeting exactly those weak areas. You can download the report as a PDF, work through it, and take it along to have your instructor sign it off.

No more guessing what a cryptic code means or hunting through the whole syllabus for the one topic that tripped you up.

How are students finding it?

The short answer: it's being used far more than we expected. By mid-June the Refresher had recorded over 3,200 KDR code appearances from uploaded result slips - that's a lot of knowledge gaps identified and turned into focused revision.

The feedback we're hearing is that the report makes weak areas much clearer, and that students find it genuinely useful preparation before sitting down with their instructor. Instead of a vague "I need to look at met again", they arrive with a specific, targeted list - which makes the sign-off conversation quicker and more productive for everyone.

What about privacy?

We collect anonymous usage data - the subject, KDR codes and general topic areas - purely to improve our courses and the Refresher itself. No personal information is stored.

Help us make it better

The Refresher is still evolving, and student feedback shapes where it goes next. If you've uploaded a result slip, we'd love to know:

  • Did it pick up the right KDR codes?

  • Did the report make your weak areas clearer?

  • Was it useful before speaking with your instructor?

You can tell us through the quick question survey linked on the Refresher page, or drop us a message on our Facebook page.

Try it yourself

Right now the KDR Refresher is free for everyone - though down the track it will become an exclusive tool for Stoneybrook Training students. So if you've got a result slip sitting in your inbox with KDR codes you haven't dealt with yet, now is the perfect time to give it a go - it takes a couple of minutes and gives you a clear plan.
