So you've decided to get your Private Pilot Licence - congratulations! The flying hours are the exciting part, but before you can sit your CAA written exams, you'll need to get to grips with pilot theory. Here's a straight-forward guide to what's involved and how to approach it.

What subjects does PPL theory cover?

For a New Zealand PPL (aeroplane), the NZCAA requires you to pass written examinations across seven core subjects: Air Law, Navigation, Meteorology, Aircraft General Knowledge, Flight Planning and Performance, Human Factors, and Principles of Flight. Each subject has its own exam, and you'll need a pass mark of 70% or above in each one.

Do I need to study the courses in order?

No - and this is one of the most liberating things about modern online pilot theory courses. With Stoneybrook, you can dip into any section of the syllabus in whatever order suits your learning style. If you're fascinated by meteorology, start there. If air law feels like the mountain to climb, tackle it early while you're fresh.

How long does PPL theory take?

This varies enormously from student to student. Most people studying part-time alongside work or other commitments find that four to six months gives them enough time to cover the material thoroughly and sit their exams with confidence. Full-time students can move faster, but rushing through the content rarely pays off at exam time.

What's the best way to study?

A few approaches that work well:

  • Study in short, regular sessions rather than marathon cramming. Thirty to forty-five minutes a day beats a six-hour Sunday session every time.

  • Use practice questions early, not just at the end. With Stoneybrook, every section includes practice questions with instant feedback, so you can test your understanding as you go rather than discovering gaps right before the exam.

  • Don't skip Human Factors. It's easy to underestimate, but it's a genuinely fascinating subject - and a well-designed exam that rewards students who engage with the material properly.
